The Varsity Golf Team competed in the Waco Midway Dameron Classic on March 7th and 8th. It was a tale of two rounds as the first day, held at Bear Ridge Golf Course was all about short-sleeve shirts and shorts on the first day of the tournament the boys came to play. The boys finished that first day in seventh place with a team score of 318. Junior Miles Parker was out front on the team with an outstanding round of 76. Senior Nick Brooks was right on Miles’ heels carding a great round of 77. Senior Rawley Soliz shot a very nice 81 on day one. Junior Jack Brown was next on the team turning in a good round of 85, and junior Jackson Null finished his day by signing for an 86. Also playing with the varsity, Senior Hudson Nix fired at 91, Junior Gavin Kerr shot a 92, and junior Brayden Hoff rounded out the team by turning in a 95.
The weather on day two was 180 degrees different and many degrees colder at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. The wind picked up and was also doing its part to make things just a little more difficult for the boys. Miles once again led the pack with another outstanding round, bettering his first day score with a 75 in tough conditions. Jackson was second on the team improving his score by seven strokes, breaking 80 and carding a great 79. Rawley matched his first day score of 81 on day two of the tournament. Nick Brooks took a total of 85 swings in the cold and wind. Jack rounded out the team with a score of 94. The medalists all had great days with Gavin and Hudson turning in identical 78s, great improvements on their first day scores. Brayden all bettered his first day score and shot a 91.
Here are some of the highlights of the tournament for the Bronco Golf Team:
Senior Hudson Nix was swinging his clubs like a tour pro! On two of the par 5s at Cottonwood he was on the green in two after hitting great drives and even better approaches. Unfortunately, Hudson’s putter wasn’t as well behaved, but he walked off of both par 5s with solid pars!
Junior Gavin Kerr smashed a drive up the middle on the difficult par 4 16th hole, leaving just 120 yards to the hole. Gavin's approach appeared as if he might hole-out, but instead left him with a tap in birdie!
Junior Miles Parkers best of the second day also included the difficult 16th hole. Miles hit his drive very long, but also very left. In fact, he wound up on the tee box of the 11th hole at Cottonwood Creek. Miles then hit a towering approach shot over tall trees to miraculously wind up on the green. Two putts later and Miles had turned a potential double bogie (or worse) into a fantastic par!
Junior Jack Brown’s favorite hole of the tournament was at Bear Ridge. On that first warm day Jack hit his drive down the center of the fairway. His next shot landed right in the middle of the green. A regulation two putts later and Jack walked off with his first birdie of the contest.
Senior Nick Brooks highlight of the tournament occurred at Bear Ridge on the first day. Nick hit a great driver off the tee box on the par five 8th hole. The drive left nick 250 yards from the green, so he pulled a three wood out of the bag. One swing later and he was on the green only 15 feet from the hole. One more swing and the ball was at the bottom of the cup and Nick was marking an eagle three on his score card!
Junior Brayden Hoff’s best hole also started off with a badly hit driver. Brayden hit his drive on the par 5 fifteenth hole deep into the woods. He hit a perfect four iron punch to get out and walked off the green with an improbable par.
The boys next tournament will be the B.I.S.D. classic at Stonetree on the 20th of March.
