The Lady Bronco Golf Team played in their 5th straight Regional Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, April 14 and 15. It was a new region and a new course for Lady Bronco Golfers, but the young team took on the challenge with great effort.
The tournament was played at Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, TX, on Lake Texoma.
After the first day, Lake was sitting in 9th place, right in the middle of the pack after a first day total of 390. Leading the tournament was Frisco Centennial, Dallas Highland Park, and Prosper Walnut Grove.
Sophomore Carly Marshall shot a very good +1, 73 on the first day to lead the team, which included a great eagle on 18 and two birdies on the day, to put her in the medalist hunt and a chance to advance to State.
Kat Moore, the lone senior on the Silver Team, turned in the second best score for the team, shooting a 93, which included 6 pars, 3 of which came on her last 3 holes. This was Moore's fourth straight Regional tournament and experience showed throughout.
Lyliana Gonzalez, Sophomore, fought against nervous tension on the front nine on day one, but bounced back on the second nine that included two pars. She shot 106.
Playing in their first Regional tournaments were sophomores Reese Sexton and Lillie Mikes. Both of them were also battling nervous energy on the first day. Sexton shot a 118 with one par, and Mikes had a 119 with one par.
Day 2 presented new challenges with a cool morning and winds that shifted directions from day 1.
Lady Bronco Golf shot a 395 on day. This placed them solidly in 9th place, 32 shots better than district rival Belton High.
Marshall had another good round, shooting 77. She had a fantastic back nine, with pars on 6 of the 9 holes and 1 birdie. She finished the tournament in 5th place, the highest a Lady Bronco Golfer has finished individually in a Regional competition. She was 4 strokes out of medal and qualifying for the State tournament. She is the alternate for State. First place individually was an incredible -5 from Frisco. 2nd place was -2 and third place was +2, both from Frisco Independence.
Playing in her final tournament for Lady Bronco Golf, Moore wasn't able to match her score from day one. She shot a 101 that included 4 pars, all on the back. Her two day total of 194 was a new personal best two day total and a great way to end her Lake Belton golf career. Her previous best was 197 at Margaritaville in 2024. Kat Moore will go on to play golf at Ottawa University in Arizona in the fall.
After battling through a tough first day, Gonzalez continued to show improvement on day 2. Shot shot 102 and played with great grit and determination.
Sexton also improved on day 2 by 3 strokes. The winds and Diamond Zoysia greens at Tanglewood continued to give Mikes trouble as she shot 124.
Lady Bronco Golf closes out their season, for all three teams, bringing home a total of 6 team medals and loses just two seniors. They are young and after a week off, ready to start getting better for next year.
