GEORGETOWN — After back-to-back wins at home, Lake Belton hit the road for a test against District 8-5A-I opponent Georgetown East View. After jumping ahead early to a 28-0 lead, the Patriots cruised to a 49-36 win over the Broncos on Friday night at Birkelbach Field.
East View’s Cormyc Guerrero had 456 of the Patriots’ 581 yards of offense. The senior quarterback was 16-for-25 passing for 283 yards and a pair of scores, and he ran the ball 15 times for 173 yards and three touchdowns.
After being down 28-0 early in the second quarter, Lake outscored the Patriots 36-21 over the remainder of the game.
“Yeah, I mean you can’t spot the other team 28 points. We didn’t get off the bus and that’s on me,” Lake head coach Brian Cope said. “Our kids fought. They fought for 48 minutes. We’ve got to fight to continue to get better. We’re not a finished product so we’ve got to watch the film, evaluate, and get better from this.”
Lake (2-3, 1-1) scored three times in the second half as it tried to weather the storm. After being down 35-14 at halftime, the Broncos scored quickly in the third quarter, with Maverik Maddux finding Davion Peters for a 36-yard TD pass just 56 seconds into the period.
East View (4-1, 2-0) answered almost immediately with a four-play drive that went 73 yards and was capped by a 63-yard touchdown pass from Guerrero to senior Allen Blaylock that put the Patriots up 42-21.
Later in the quarter, Maddux found Brock Von Racjs for a 41-yard score that cut the deficit to 42-28 with 1:13 left in the third.
Maddux was 17-for-31 for 278 yards passing with a pair of TDs and a pair of interceptions. Peters led Lake’s receivers, reeling in seven catches for 152 yards and two scores.
“I feel like we threw the ball well in some stuff, and I think our kids executed our plan a little bit,” Cope said. “But we also showed some big spots on pass protection on offense.”
Maddux was sacked three times in the second half, one of which resulted in a fumble.
Sophomore Jessiah James filled in on Lake’s final drive after Maddux was helped off the field by trainers with what looked to be a leg injury. James completed four of five passes for 63 yards. His performance was highlighted by a 36-yard TD pass to junior Zion Harness, followed by a 2-point conversion throw to Harness that cut the final gap to 13 with just more than a minute left to play.
East View raced out of the gate, scoring on the first play of the game when Guerrero kept the ball on a read-option and ran for an 84-yard TD just 20 seconds in.
The Patriots tacked on another touchdown when Blake Honeycutt scored on a 1-yard run to cap a five-play, 83-yard drive that was highlighted by completions of 54 and 23 yards from Guerrero.
After East View picked off a Maddux pass, the Patriots set up shop on their 35-yard line. Nine plays and almost 3 1/2 minutes later, the Patriots scored again on a 16-yard strike from Guerrero to Sam Williams to make it 21-0 with 4:23 left in the opening quarter.
Both teams posted a pair of TDs in the second quarter, which kept the Broncos trailing by 21. East View’s scores came on a 21-yard run from Jayvion Clayter with 10:14 left in the quarter then a 23-yard run by Guerrero with 1:24 left. Lake’s two scores came on a 2-yard run by Zyien Dupree and a 44-yard TD strike from Maddux to Peters with 30 seconds remaining before the break.
East View scored its final TD in the third quarter on a 29-yard run by Guerrero that preceded James’ touchdown throw to Harness and the ensuing 2-point conversion.
