BELTON — Lake Belton set a goal in the offseason to go undefeated at home. The Broncos took another step toward achieving that with a 49-23 win over Leander Glenn in a District 8-5A-I matchup Friday night at Tiger Field.

After a 14-all tie at the end of the first quarter, the Broncos (3-3, 2-1) outscored the Grizzlies (0-6, 0-3) 35-9 the rest of the way to improve their home mark to 3-0 and pick up an important bounce-back victory in the process.

“They weren’t really moving the ball well on offense. I think what they showed on film and what we evaluated on some stuff was really good,” said Lake head coach Brian Cope, whose squad forced eight turnovers, inlcuding five fumbles. “Offensively we were able to execute the game plan on both sides and so I think just stay the course.”

Lake utilized a combination of sophomore Jessiah James and junior Reese Rosenbaum at quarterback after usual starter Maverik Maddux was helped off the field on the game’s opening drive with what appeared to be a leg injury.

The duo went a combined 12-of-23 passing for 223 yards. Rosenbaum had 65 yards and three TDs with a pair of interceptions, while James had the other 158 yards and an interception.

“I’m proud of these kids to go compete for 48 minutes,” Cope said. “I thought our operations on both sides were really good tonight. In this district, it’s an every Friday night deal and so we get to enjoy it tonight and then get back to work.”

A Grizzlies fumble gave the Broncos the ball in Glenn territory early in the opening quarter.

Shortly after, Rosenbaum connected with Brock Von Racjs for a 25-yard TD on the only play of the drive to put Lake ahead 7-0 with 7:39 in the first. The Broncos’ defense struck again on the Grizzlies next drive when Gavin Stewart intercepted a pass and returned it to the Glenn 18.

Harness then ran on a jet sweep for an 18-yard score on another one-play drive that put the Broncos ahead 14-0 with just more than 6 minutes left in the opening period, though Alexander Perez set up the Grizzlies with ideal field position on the ensuing kickoff return.

Perez advanced the ball to the Lake 14, and Braelon Deloatche’s 2-yard scoring run cut Lake’s lead to 14-7 with 4:54 left in the first.

After the Broncos went three-and-out, Glenn used a seven-play, 60-yard drive that was capped with a 27-yard Braelon Deloatche TD run to tie the contest at 14 with 26 seconds left in the first quarter.

Lake scored twice in the second quarter, first on a 6-yard TD pass from Rosenbaum to Luke Phillips, and then on a 1-yard run by Rosenbaum to provide a 28-14 edge with 4 minutes left in the first half.

Glenn’s Andres Salazar nailed a 26-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining before the break to make it 28-17 at halftime.

The Broncos scored just once in the third quarter on a 17-yard rush from Zion Harness, which wrapped up a 50-yard drive that started after a Grizzlies fumble.

Lake tacked on two scores in the final period, first on a 7-yard TD pass from Rosenbaum to Logan Winkler on the quarter’s opening play, and again with just more than 2 minutes left on Zyien Dupree’s 85-yard TD run.

Deloatche added his third touchdown run in the fourth with a 4-yard carry with 7 minutes left to finish Glenn’s scoring.

Both teams are home next week, with Lake facing Leander while Glenn takes on Cedar Park.
