After opening the second round of district play with two consecutive victories, the Lake Belton Broncos looked to extend their winning streak Tuesday night against Copperas Cove at home.
The evening began with excitement as the team celebrated teammate Kamryn Daniels reaching 500 career assists. However, despite a strong second-set comeback, the Broncos were unable to overcome the persistent efforts of the Bulldawgs, falling 1-3.
Lake Belton struggled to find its rhythm early, battling serve-receive issues and offensive miscues that allowed Copperas Cove to take control of the opening set. The Broncos fell 17-25, putting themselves in an early hole.
The second set presented another challenge as communication errors contributed to an early five-point deficit, forcing the Broncos to call a timeout. Lake Belton responded with renewed determination, battling back to even the score at 18-18. The Broncos carried that momentum through the closing points, securing a hard-fought 26-24 victory to even the match at one set apiece.
The Broncos carried that energy into the third set, but Copperas Cove refused to let Lake Belton take control. The Bulldawgs steadily chipped away at the Broncos’ early advantage before pulling ahead to claim the set 25-21, putting Lake Belton on the brink of defeat.
With the match on the line in the fourth set, the Broncos struggled to maintain their momentum as Copperas Cove capitalized on the Broncos' trouble with serve receive, lack of offensive aggression, and defensive errors. The Bulldawgs pulled away to win the set 25-15, sealing the 3-1 match victory.
Gracie Lott led the Broncos offensively with 12 kills, followed closely by Ava Wood with 11. Kaleileana Cress added eight kills to the effort. Defensively, Taylan Cole paced Lake Belton with 15 digs, while Kruz Smith and Daniels each recorded 13. Daniels celebrated a significant career milestone, surpassing 500 career assists while finishing the match with 30 assists.
The Broncos will look to bounce back Friday evening when they return home to host Temple in their final regular-season home match. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
