Lady Bronco Silver and Red Teams played in the Belton ISD Invitational Golf Tournament on Thursday, March 21 at Stonetree Golf Course in Killeen. Stonetree will be the site of the 22-5A District Golf Tournament that will be held on Monday and Tuesday, March 25 and 26, so it was a great opportunity for the golfers to be able to see and play the course before the tournament.
As seems to have been true all season, weather conditions were not ideal. There was rain or drizzle in the air a good part of the day and chilly conditions. The wet weather affected the roll of the ball on the greens and fairways, but was a good learning experience for the teams as they had to adjust to the changing conditions.
Lady Bronco Silver shot a new team record 356, beating their previous low round by one stroke that was shot at Sammons in the fall. Their 356 won them 2nd place just four shots out of the lead.
Freshman Carly Marshall again led the way for Lady Bronco Silver. Marshall shot a one over par 73, and won the tournament. Marshall has either won five individual championships this year and has placed in the top five, three other times, with district still to come.
Junior Riley Clawson had another great day on the course shooting an 89, just one stroke off of her personal best. She finished tied for 7th individually.
Junior Kat Moore fired a 92 for Lady Bronco Silver. Moore shot a new personal best round, one shot lower than her previous personal best which was at Margaritaville just a few weeks ago. Moore finished in the top 15 individually.
Freshman Lyliana Gonzalez, in her first tournament on the Silver Team, tied her personal best of 102.
Senior Shelby Chaney, with a 105, rounded out the scoring for the Silver Team, shooting one of her lowest rounds of the season.
Red Team also played in the tournament. Every member of the Red Team, with one exception, is new to golf this year. They came out and played very hard and have improved all year long.
Freshman Lillie Mikes led the Red Team. Mikes was able to score two bogeys on the day.
Senior Emily Delgado had the second lowest score for the Red Team. She had one par and three bogeys.
Senior Da Hae Keum had the third lowest score and had one par.
Junior Lexie Holler felt like she improved drastically in this tournament. She had one par and one bogey.
Suellen Tillis, freshman, in just her second tournament ever, rounded out the scoring for the Red Team.
Both teams will continue their season on Monday and Tuesday at the District Tournament. The top two teams and two medalists will advance the Regional Tournament at Margaritaville in Conroe on April 17 and 18.
