The Lake Belton boys track & field team earned representation at the 5A-Region III Championships this past Friday and Saturday in Humble. Arguably the toughest region in 5A, the Broncos were going to have to be on their “A” game to earn the opportunity to advance to the 5A State Championships next month.

Sophomore Carson Yandell got things started for the Broncos in the Pole Vault. Although he placed 10th overall, Yandell cleared 12-6 for the fourth time this season. Senior Adam Walden was next up in the Shot Put, where he would finish 11th in the region with a throw of 47’10”. We thank Adam for all of his contributions to the track & field program these last 4 years. Junior Caleb Loper was one spot away from the finals, finishing 9th in the Discus with a throw of 138’00. Freshman Keaton Washington would compete hard in the 400 meter dash preliminary round. Though it was not his best showing, the experience he was able to gain will be beneficial to him moving forward these next 3 years.

Junior Xavier Wells would compete in the High Jump on Saturday, where the field was the toughest among all regions. Wells battled until the very end, clearing 6-6 on his last attempt which was good enough for a bronze medal. He fell one missed attempt short of qualifying for the UIL 5A State Championships. Sophomore Kendrick Jones Jr would start things off Saturday morning with a first place finish in the Long Jump, leaping out a distance of 23’2”. After numerous hours of weather delays, Jones Jr would double down and take the gold in the 200 meter dash as well with a time of 21.04. This is the second year in a row of Jones Jr qualifying for the State Meet. The Broncos would finish 8th overall at the Regional Championships with 26 points.

The Broncos will close out their season next Friday, May 3rd at the UIL 5A State Championships in Austin.
