The Lake Belton High School boy’s golf team returned once again to the State Championship Tournament. The team showed up Sunday for their practice round full of excitement and anticipation, but that soon turned to boredom and frustration. Thunderstorms and hail showed up just as the team did and forced the boys to wait for four hours until the round was finally cancelled. Day one of the tournament started shrouded in fog and the boy’s rangefinders would register no more than five yards. After a fog delay the boys hit balls into haze. Sophomore Miles Parker led the team on the first day with an excellent round 78. He started the back nine with a great drive to the middle of the fairway, and his approach came up a little short. After his worst shot of the day, a duffed chip, he made the 30 foot putt for birdie! Close behind Miles, Sophomore Jackson Null turned in a super 79 for round one. That 79 included the 18th hole at Legacy Hills. His first shot of the day was a low hook right down the center of the dogleg par five. A two iron later and Jackson’s ball was just five feet short of the green. One chip and a tap in birdie was the result. Senior James Bond was third on the team with a very nice score of 81. Senior Mason Euer took a total of 83 swings on the first day of the contest. And, Junior Nick Brooks carded an 87 for the first day. Nicks best hole of the day was the par four 10th hole. He hit a great driver to the middle of the fairway, after a five wood t the fringe and a really good chip and a two put led to a stress free par. Day two started out much clearer, with golfers actually able to see their golf ball hit the ground after their tee shots. Jackson played amazingly steady golf the second day and turned in a score of 75 which included no birdies. One of those pars was the result of a missed drive that left Jackson in the left rough. He decided to play it smart and hit a five iron 195 yards to just left of the green. His third shot was an awesome flop to five feet of the hole. One putt later and Jackson had saved his par. Miles held steady with a super 79 the second day of the tournament. Miles’s best hole of the day was the par five 18th. James Bond was once again third on the team after recording a score of 83. Mason Euer’s score 85. Mason saved his best for last; he bombed a drive 350 yards up hill to pin high of the green. After a good flop shot over a tree left him just short of the green, Mason came within inches of chipping in for the birdie. A tap in par ended Mason’s last state tournament. Nick’s score of 84 reflected an improvement of three strokes over the first day and included a great five foot birdie on the par three fourth hole.
Despite a slightly disappointing finish to the state tournament the Broncos had another stellar year with their fourth straight district title, and their fourth straight state qualifying team. Jackson, Miles and Nick are excited to get back to work and make another run for a trip to the 5A state tournament and a shot at redemption!
