The Lake Belton Varsity Broncos locked into a defensive battle last Friday night, ultimately outlasting Weiss Varsity Softball for a gritty 3-1 victory. Both squads showcased elite talent in the circle, but timely small ball and a stellar defensive effort allowed the Broncos to pull away late.
The game remained a scoreless stalemate until the 5th inning, thanks largely to a commanding start from Lilliana Herrera. Herrera tossed five shutout innings, scattering three hits and walking none to earn the win.
In the 6th, with the Broncos holding a slim lead, Alaysha Williams delivered the defensive play of the game. With two outs and Weiss threatening to score with runners on second and third, Williams made a full-extension diving catch in left field to keep the Wolves off the board.
The Broncos broke the ice in the bottom of the 5th when Bryson Gott executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, squeezing in Isabell Magana for the game's first run. Magana was a constant threat on the basepaths all night, finishing with three hits and three stolen bases.
Lake Belton added two insurance runs in the 6th:
Alexis Walker showed aggressive baserunning, stealing second and forcing a wild throw that allowed a runner to cross the plate.
Alaysha Williams capped off her big night by driving in Magana with an RBI single to left.
Weiss managed to spoil the shutout in the 7th with a solo home run, but Natalie Hosch remained composed in relief. Hosch threw two solid innings to shut the door and earn the save, securing the 3-1 win for the Broncos.
Lake Belton will now shift their focus toward postseason aspirations as they open up District play this Tuesday night at home. The Broncos are set to host Waco University, looking to defend their home turf and carry their defensive consistency into the start of the conference race.
