The Lake Belton High School varsity tennis team kicked off their district season against a perennial powerhouse in Waco Midway High School. While the Panthers secured a 16-3 team victory, the final scoreline doesn't capture the sheer determination and high-level tennis displayed by the Broncos across every court.
In a match defined by marathon battles, physical endurance, and high-stakes tiebreakers, Lake Belton competed strongly with one of the region's top programs.
Key Victory Highlights
Lake Belton’s three court victories featured dominant performances and thrilling comeback efforts:
Girls Doubles Dominance: The tandem of Sara Stephens and Abigale Harris set the tone with a razor-sharp performance, controlling their match from start to finish to secure a clean 6-2, 6-2 win.
Straight-Set Singles Triumph: Andrew Williams delivered a brilliant singles performance, displaying remarkable poise and tactical consistency to sweep his Midway opponent 6-4, 6-2.
Gritty Comeback Win: Abigale Harris capped off a stellar individual day by proving her endurance in a singles nail-biter. After dropping a difficult first set, Harris regrouped to storm back for a heroic 0-6, 7-5, (10-6) victory in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Heartbreak in the Marathons
The Broncos showed immense resilience in two of the longest, most competitive matches of the day:
Sara Stephens went toe-to-toe with Midway's #1 singles player in a grueling two-and-a-half-hour battle. Stephens battled back from a set down to claim a dramatic second-set tiebreaker before narrowly falling in a split-set thriller, 3-6, 7-6 (5), (5-10).
Ben Johnson and Reid Ramirez represented Lake Belton in a epic two-hour doubles showdown. The pair pushed Midway's best shot-makers to the limit, showcasing tremendous chemistry and hustle in a tough loss.
The Broncos will take on Harker Heights next Tuesday away for their next district match.
