The Lake Belton Broncos varsity tennis team faced a formidable opponent on September 19, falling 4-15 to Liberty Hill. Despite the overall team loss, the Broncos delivered a competitive performance from top to bottom, displaying exceptional resilience and pushing a tough Panthers squad to the limit in nearly every match.
The final score hardly tells the full story of the afternoon's competitive action, as six different matches went down to the wire in high-stakes ten-point super tie-breaks. Small margins made the difference between winning and losing. Lake Belton narrowly missed expanding their win total after coming up just short in three grueling third-set tie-breaks:
Quint Mackenzie / Eli Stewart: 3-6, 6-4, (5-10)
Ethan Muehlstein: 6-3, 2-6, (10-12)
Reid Ramirez: 6-4, 2-6, (4-10)
Despite those heartbreaking setbacks, the Broncos refused to back down and secured four impressive, gritty victories—all of which required high-stress, third-set tie-break triumphs:
Sara Stephens / Alyssa Naumann: 2-6, 6-4, (10-6)
Eli Stewart: 6-3, 4-6, (11-9)
Addie Kruppa: 5-7, 6-4, (10-7)
Sara Stephens: 5-7, 6-4, (10-8)
The standout performance of the day belonged to Sara Stephens. Stephens put on a masterclass in poise under pressure, gutting out two demanding super tie-break victories on the day—first teaming up with Alyssa Naumann to rally from a set down in doubles, and later battling through a tight three-set marathon in her singles match.
