GEORGETOWN — In a bid to keep alive its hopes of capturing the District 8-5A-I title, Lake Belton started slowly and never recovered in a 65-21 loss to the Georgetown Eagles on Friday night at Birkelbach Field.
The Broncos (6-3, 4-2) struggled to contain an explosive passing attack as Georgetown receivers Xavier Warren and Davyn Sedwick combined for six plays of 20-plus yards, and the Eagles’ running game turned in five more.
“They have two outstanding receivers that did a great job,” Broncos head coach Brian Cope said. “Their young, sophomore quarterback played really well and we made some crucial mistakes. We’ll learn from it and we’ll continue to grow.”
Sedwick had three touchdown catches, two of which were for 60-plus yards, on four receptions for 168 yards. Warren hauled in five passes for 153 yards as the Broncos allowed 690 total yards.
Georgetown (8-1, 5-1) jumped out to a 30-0 first-quarter lead and never let up. Quarterback Kaleb McDougle completed his first six passes, including three for 40-plus yards. The Broncos also struggled to slow down Eagles running back Jett Walker, who rushed for four TDs in the first half while picking up 181 yards on the ground.
Georgetown struck early and often. Its first play from scrimmage was a 59-yard pass from McDougle to Warren. Walker got the ball on the final three plays of the drive and picked up 14 yards, including a 6-yard rushing touchdown and the ensuing 2-point conversion that made the score 8-0.
After Lake went three-and-out on its opening drive, Walker scored again with a 13-yard run when he stayed behind blockers the whole way. The Eagles kicked an extra point to make their advantage 15-0.
After another Broncos three-and-out, McDougle connected with Sedwick for the pair’s first touchdown of the contest, a 64-yard score that pushed Georgetown’s advantage to 22-0.
Walker broke off two big runs to further the Eagles’ cause, the first being a 73-yard TD burst on third-and-3. He then punched in his second 2-point conversion of the night to make it 30-0. His final first-half score was a 37-yard run that made the advantage 37-0. The junior did not play in the second half.
Both Broncos quarterbacks — Eli Mascarenas and Maverik Maddux — threw interceptions in the second quarter. The Eagles capitalized on Mascarenas’ pick, with Alex Wilson returning it 20 yards to the end zone to put Lake Belton in a 44-0 hole.
McDougle connected with Sedwick once again on Georgetown’s final first-half score, this time from 69 yards out for a 51-7 tally.
Maddux threw both of Lake’s first-half touchdowns, an 18-yard strike to Christian Onchweri and a jump ball from 33 yards out to Xavier Wells on the following drive that made it 51-14 at halftime.
Maddux was also responsible for Lake’s lone second-half score, running in for a 3-yard touchdown with just 11 seconds to go for the final margin. Michael Gonzalez led the march, carrying the ball 11 times for 66 yards. Gonzalez finished as the Broncos’ leading rusher.
Maddux took over after the pick-six by Mascarenas and finished the night 8-for-18 with 163 yards. Mascarenas was 1-for-4 for 7 yards.
The Eagles scored twice in the second half as McDougle and Sedwick connected for a 24-yard touchdown on their first drive after the break.
McDougle had Georgetown on the march again, but Wells intercepted his throw intended for Sedwick in the end zone. The sophomore quarterback finished the night with 362 yards through the air, completing 16 of 22 passes.
McDougle was replaced by Jaheim Dowd, who connected with Caleb Reyna on a 6-yard score to give Georgetown a 65-14 lead before Lake’s final drive.
Lake will close out the regular season next Friday at Tiger Field against Killeen Chaparral, which is winless in district play.
“We need to respond,” Cope said. “We will be ready to go on Monday with a great game plan, and then we will get our kids ready to go for Friday night.”
